Accessibility levels

The mdw Repository knows several accessibility levels for data deposited.

1) Data may be accessed openly

In this case both the metadata and the actual data are openly available under an open license.
All metadata will be issued under a CC-BY-NC license.
All data is issued under a respective open license.
No contact between the user and the repository, the depositor or the maintainer of the data must be established for access.

2) Data may be accessed freely via ordering

In this case both the metadata and the actual data are openly available under an open license.
All metadata will be issued under a CC-BY-NC license.
All data is issued under a respective open license.
Interested users must place an order via the order form by stating name, email address, institution, and point of use.
The request is handled by the mdw Repository.
The depositor or maintainer will not be contacted with the orders.
But a more in-depth knowledge on the orders placed is ensured.

3) Data may be accessed via ordering at permission from the depositor or maintainer

In this case the metadata will be issued under a CC-BY-NC license.
All data should be issued under a respective open license though this license can be adapted for good reason.
Interested users must place an order via the order form by stating name, email address, institution, and point of use.
The request is handled by the mdw Repository and forwarded to the depositor or maintainer who grants or denies access.

4) Data access is closed

In this case the metadata are openly available under a CC-BY-NC license.
The data is available in the mdw repositories but can be under any license.
Access to the data can only be granted by the depositor or maintainer upon contact by the interested user.
The access may require further legal actions, e.g. signing a non-disclosure-agreement.

5) Data is not available in the mdw Repository - metadata only

In this case the metadata are openly available under a CC-BY-NC license.
The data is not available in the mdw repositories.
In case the metadata set does not contain information on retrievable of the actual data, please contact the maintainer of the metadata entry or the mdw Repository team for further information.

Depositors Information - Selecting a license

In order to be able to exchange data the mdw Repository aligns with the 12 rights statements listed in the The Europeana Licensing Framework (see page 16) for all openly available data and metadata.

By default, all metadata are openly available under a CC-BY-NC license, though depositors may choose another license from the rights statement if needed (despite the "unknown"). Be very careful when selecting your license type. Once selected a switch to a more restricted license version is not possible!

Data managed in the mdw Repository can cover all license types, closed and open ones depending mainly on the requirements of the research project (e.g. level of data protection). Each digital object (which includes also all renditions, e.g. previews) need to carry a rights statement and accessibility status. The rights statement holds the copyright status. See Rights Statement for more information. The accessibility status be set to any of the five accessibility stati outlined above.

Depositors and maintainer must make sure that the rights statement does not contradict the accessibility status.

If you have any questions, please contact the mdw Repository team.
