Managing metadata with Adobe Bridge®

Adobe Bridge

Adobe Bridge® is the sofware app within Adobe Creative Suite® used to organize files and manage metadata across all file formats regardless of the application used to create or edit them. Adobe Bridge® uses the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) for its metadata management - just as the mdw repositories.

Adobe Bridge® is ideal for editing the XMP metadata for one or more files directly within the metadata panel.

Depending on format of the selected file, the following types of metadata appear by default:

  • File Properties general characteristics of the file, e.g. files size, or creation date.
  • IPTC Core International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) specification intended to manage metadata for photographs, emphasizing on news and stock photos.
  • IPTC Extension International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) specification extension focusing on content and legal details.
  • Camera Data (Exif) metadatan written by digital cameras
  • GPS Global Positioning System (GPS) metadata
  • Camera Raw Settings applied by the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in when enhancing digital negatives.
  • Edit History Photoshop edit history
  • DICOM Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) metadata
  • Audio metadata for audio files
  • Video metadata for video files
  • Fonts fonts used in Adobe InDesign files
  • Linked Files linked files used in Adobe InDesign document
  • Plates CMYK plates specified for printing
  • Document Swatches swatches used in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator files
  • Mobile SWF metadata of SWF files

The metadata panel can be customized to hold other metadata schemes, e.g. DCMI Metadata Terms or custom mdw schema

On Windows 7 any metadata extension is added to the following folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\4.0\custom. Restart Adobe Bridge® to see changes.

Please contact the mdw Repository team for further information on adding custom XMP metadata schemes to Adobe Bridge's metadata panel for mdw Repository metadata management.
